Our Decision 2012 coverage continues with a look at the Nebraska legislative candidates in District 39, which covers Valley, Waterloo and western Douglas County.
The current state senator for District 39 is Beau McCoy. "We have a tremendous number of small businesses not only in Elkhorn, but in west Omaha, Valley, Waterloo. I'm one of those business owners and I think anytime we can find ways to create jobs, new jobs, especially for young people coming out of our great schools in this area, give them the opportunity to raise their kids here and also keep the jobs we have."
As a state senator for the past four years, McCoy says he has contributed to keeping a healthy economic environment for both urban and rural areas in the district.
"As a fourth-generation ranch kid, I have a pretty good understanding of ag issues, I've served on the Natural Resources Committee the last four years, I feel I bring a lot to the table when it comes to agriculture and water issues in that I understand it, it's what my family's been through."
It's diversity that his opponent also touts. Judy Domina has lived across the state. "I can see when you're living in the metropolitan areas where you see the state as ending at the Elkhorn River, but there is a lot of state out west. Their needs are very different."
Domina's main goal is to be a voice for families in crisis. She took over custody of her grandsons, so Domina has seen gaps in the system. "When I asked for help it wasn't there because everything is cookie cutter rather than individualized for the family."
Domina says she is on her third trip knocking on doors in her district and it's that commitment to the constituents that will help her in Lincoln.
