It's just a bad time to not have your best foot forward. That's the complaint coming from the neighborhood around the Cox Classic golf tournament as 132nd Street construction continues at a time thousands are trying to reach Champions Run.
A stretch of 132nd Street finally opened up to traffic earlier in the month, but the street is still a bit of a mess. Driving to the Cox Classic from 132nd and Dodge or from 132nd and Blondo takes you through a construction zone maze to Champions Run.
It is a bit of a hassle weaving around and near oncoming traffic, but those who live in the neighborhood wonder why this couldn’t have been cleaned up before the golf pros teed off.
“This is ridiculous,” said resident Dennis Moore. “I mean my goodness, I've driven by this street so many times this summer. I believe they had delays in June, but I don’t see any workers around. Now the Cox Classic is on, now we get all these busy bees working like something’s getting done.”
City crews are working to turn a two-lane 132nd Street into four lanes, complete with turn lanes. Officials say they are actually working with the organizers of the Cox Classic and right now construction is ahead of schedule.
“The contract identifies they had to have a certain amount done by July 23rd, which was before the Cox Classic,” said Tim O’Brien with the city of Omaha.
“I believe they were done a couple of weeks before when we had one lane in each direction open. We worked with Cox Classsic on the entrance to Eagle Run and on the shuttle buses moving in and out, opened up a portion of that sooner than anticipated also.”
Still, Moore says this just looks bad for the city with all of this construction going on during a major event. "It’s not good. Somebody brought up the same thing went on down at Rosenblatt at one time right when the series was going on. I just can’t believe that nobody is watching, nobody is watching.”
Crews say the construction has not caused any problems and that so far, traffic has been moving along just fine.
