A car parked in a garage at home isn’t a safe place to keep a wallet and key.

Janet Hansen and her family learned that last week when a thief took advantage of a garage door left open. “No more keys in the cupholder and no more unlocked vehicles, even if the garage door is shut.”

Late last Wednesday night, Janet’s 2005 Honda Civic was stolen out of her home’s garage even with her family inside the house. Nobody heard a thing.

Janet’s wallet left in the driver’s side door contained credit cards. Barely an hour after the theft, someone tried to use a card at a midtown convenience store.

Janet obtained security camera video of the suspect. “I’m watching him use my card.” However, because Janet had "check ID" marked on the back, a suspicious clerk refused to take the credit card and kept it.

Janet and police hope the video will lead to a suspect. “We are investigating the stolen auto," said Omaha Police Officer Jake Bettin. "The person with the card is obviously connected.”

Even if a suspect isn’t identified, Janet is hoping her 2005 Civic will be found.
