It's a plan that has been talked about for years now the system of trail connectors is moving one step closer to being a reality.

A proposal to connect the field club trail with those to the west is being presented to the public Thursday, July, 29th.

Seen by some as Omaha's "tiny trail" the Field Club Trail still gets a lot of use, but for cyclists Lyndsey Beck and Kristin Feerhusen getting a good workout can be a dizzying experience.

Lyndsey Beck says, "We usually ride together so we go down to the grain elevators and then turn around and go back and forth a few times."

That may be changing officials plan to extend the Field Club Trail and connect it to the much larger Keystone Trail.

The connector starts at Grover and runs past the grain elevator and under the Interstate, from there it turns west to 36th Street.

The proposal has the trail cutting through the Burlington Road Neighborhood using D Street, then under 42nd and turning back south to connect with the Keystone.

That would be great news for Amanda Waldron who is training for a century bike ride.

Amanda Waldron says, "I usually use the Keystone to train because that's the longest one we have around here and I love to see it connected."

Brett Gulbrandson likes the idea of a safer way to get to and from places on his bike. Gulbrandson recently returned from California where the bike laws may have spoiled him.

Brett Gulbrandson says, “I’m so use to having a six foot across bike lane that I’m riding in and now I'm rubbing elbows with cars again, it makes you nervous."

With longer trails and more ways to get to them both hikers and bikers could avoid most of the vehicle traffic and enjoy a safer workout.

The public meeting to discuss the connector plan will be held in the Salvation Army Kroc Center at 28th and Y Streets Thursday, July 29th from 6:30 to 8PM.

Burlington Road Neighborhood Association is invited as well as any interested citizens.
