Look around the airport and it's not hard to spot someone using a cell phone. You'll also notice many travelers have something else in common, time in front of the airport monitors.
Gordon Whitten, CEO and founder of Omaha-based Sojern, Inc conducted research that indicates two million people go through airports every day in the United States. The company now has a travel app for iPhones designed to make air travel easier.
The app is called Airport Remote and it transmits information displayed on monitors from more than 100 US airports directly to the smart phone.
Whitten points out that it can take up to twenty minutes from the time a plane lands to reach the gate. So with Airport Remote according to Whitten, "you can be looking at your monitor from right in your seat in the airplane."
And the app is useful away from the airport. Whitten said, "it can be used on the taxi-way, in a taxi cab, at home or in a hotel."
We tested the app at Eppley Airfield where the arrival of a Southwest flight was listed on the monitor as fifteen minutes late. In a matter of seconds, Whitten called up the exact display with Airport Remote on his iPhone.
The app is currently a top-ten seller in the paid travel app section of the Apple store. The cost is $3.99. A beta test is currently underway for an Airport Remote app with Android. For more information search the web: airportremote.com.
There are also a number of free travel apps available.
