Senator says he wants to make a point

A | A | A

Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers has filed a lawsuit against God. He says he just wants to make the point that the constitution allows a lawsuit to be filed for any reason.

The action seeks a "permanent injunction ordering Defendant to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats."

The Plaintiff (Chambers) is identified as "the duly elected and serving State Senator from the 11th Legislative District in Omaha, Nebraska."

The petition states that the "Defendant (also known by various aliases, titles, names, designations) is present in all places at the same time ("Omnipresent")' is the admitted perpetrator of the deleterious acts complained of herein."

Among the Claims for Relief: "Defendant has made and continues to make terroristic threats of grave harm to innumerable persons, including constituents of Plaintiff whom Plaintiff has the duty to represent.

Defendant directly and proximately has caused, inter alia (among other things), fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornados, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like."

Senator Chambers says, "This is a way to show that anyone can sue anyone including God. It's an object lesson too. It demonstrates that the mere filing of a lawsuit doesn't guarantee a win."

Creighton law professor Mike Fenner says, "It's a frivolous lawsuit but not one that's really going to cost anyone much."

Chambers says he decided to file the lawsuit in part as a response to other lawmakers who have tried to prevent lawsuits from being filed over the years and in part due to a high profile sexual assault case in Lancaster County. In that case, there is an ongoing clash over a judge's order preventing the use of the word "rape" and other words at trial.

The petition was filed in Douglas County District Court. Click here for a pdf copy of the document.

Ernie doesn't need a Court Of Law what that nut case needs is a padded 5x5 room and a straight jacket. Sueing God come on get a grip. How can You sue something that is fictional. Not only did he waste the courts time but Our hard earn tax money that could of been use for something more helpful like feeding the homeless. This guy need to get a grip. and he is our Senator.. God help nebraska.. just goes to show they let any fruitcake run for office. What is America turning into.

This is not serious, it is just a previlege not by plan that we are here on earth.Don't lead God into temptation.

I hope Ernie wins. If anything, God should be sued for not interviening in violent crimes being commited by the devil. He's everywhere and all powerful yet does nothing to keep us from harm or wipe out evil all together. Is he not powerful enough to fight the devil? Does he look away when he could have helped? God is guilty!!

Too bad the plaintiff, Senator Chambers, already lost the case as soon as he filed it, due to a very reliable source...The Holy Bible. Senator Ernies Chambers' claims that the defendant God, caused inter alia (among other things), fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornados, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like are COMPLETELY INCORRECT! The Bible (Word of God) in John 10:10, tells us that the thief (enemy/devil) comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but God comes so that we can have abundant life. Maybe he should have used the devil as the defendant instead of using God, our loving Father. I understand that the Senator may have wanted to make a point, but I think there are better and more appropriate ways to make them. God bless…

If God fails to appear in court, will a judgement be entered against him?

ERNIE MUST BE ON POWERFUL DRUG THAT HE DONT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON, SO GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE THERE AND LEAVE GOD ALONE.

As I read through the comments, I see an example of the state of the American public; it makes me sad. People are missing the point. He is trying to shed some light on one of the stupid policies of that we have in our courts... that’s it. People ask “why would he sue god, if he doesn’t believe in it?” He could have gone with any fictional character out there, the tooth fairy being a prime example. But he didn't, he went with the one most people would be familiar with. Deborah from Omaha said it’s sad that our leaders mock god. All our leaders should be Atheists, like the nation’s founders intended. I commend Senator Ernie Chambers for his bravery, It was a clever way to bring up the subject. “The government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the christian religion.” –John Adams 1797. -Question Everything-

Posted by: matt on Sep 25, 2007 at 03:35 PM
I think the suit should have been allowed on the premise that it would force the court to recognize God is real and in control of the world. That would be a huge victory for Christians as it would mean the government would formally recognize the Almighty. As for the verdict, God will take care of that. Christians should realize the opportunity instead of feeling threatened or condeming. After all, thats what Apostle Paul was doing in front of Ceasar.

kim:"How can Ernie sue god when he is an atheist? Why would he sue an entity that he does not believe exists? It makes no sense." Kim..I agree...that makes him a hypocrite! Hurry up term limits! It's obviously a media ploy because any public figure knows if you blaspheme, the spotlight will be on u like crazy.. so all these years i "thought" this man's filibustering and refusing to conform attitude was commendable...makes me sick now. Now I just see that it was a way to divert attention from the fact that during his reign he has not made nearly any progress in making a difference in the district which he represents. Okay ernie. I hope u enjoy the media attention while the people in ur district still live under the poverty line and where violence is still a way of life. Bang up job senator!...or shall i say bang bang..because that's all i hear and see in ur district these days. Thanks for the contribution!

God made the laws, the world and everything that exists, in other words God owns everything and everyone and therefore cannot be sued for what he does with His possessions. Senator loses before the indictment begins. The senator will lose twice unless he understands God has the senators life in His hands.

That idiot will do anything for a headline. Glad he is on his way out!

Posted by: JENNY on Sep 21, 2007 at 12:23 PM
ERNIE CHAMBERS HAS WAY TO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS, I BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS REASONING FOR EVERYTHING. I BELIEVE THAT GOD DOES WHAT HE DOES BECAUSE HE IS FED UP WITH THE WAY THAT THIS WORLD TAKES ADVANTAGE OF EVERYTHING. SO ERNIE CHAMBERS NEEDS TO DROP HIS LITTLE "LAWSUIT" AGAINST GOD AND CONCENTRATE ON MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES

Posted by: caesar on Sep 21, 2007 at 10:15 AM
Be more to such an action than one find in scratching the surface,it may seem foolish but it opens gateway for all,in appealing unto the power of creation, with concerns. Climate Change,it clearer time on Mother Earth be limited. We have little choice but departure till planet heals renew itself. Our continuation of spiritual development then continuing.Such information that be given unto loved ones,it not the end of an story, only the ending an chapter in human development. All hold a spiritual account as represents spiritual development, such account open, until reaching ultimate goal of spiritual development thus end journey complete in one's spiritual enlightenment. God accepts the lawsuit served by the good senator, now putting forward such defence. Judgement needed not but preperation, all must depart mother Earth for a period. It being an Palestinian state long long long overdue, such ending the ongoing injustice future chapters of human development, then far more agreeable reading... ..

Relax, folks. Senator Chambers is showing how desperate he is getting for attention since he will be out of the legislature because of term limits. While he has been an adequate state senator, he needs to be noticed, no matter what. If we ignore him, he'll back off. It will be interesting to see who will be elected to fill his spot - someone who cares about the area, not a publicity hound.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 20, 2007 at 08:24 PM
That's it...the eccentric Mr Chambers has gone to far.He is abusing his office and making a mockery of it as well.I think this stunt should deem a call for his resignation.I am disgusted by this.

Dear Senator Chambers, My name is Mrs. Judi Piburn. I respectfully write to you as a personal witness for God that you are bringing the law suite against. I am simply a proud wife of 29 years, a proud mother, and a proud grandmother. I ask you to withdraw your lawsuite against God and bring it against humanity. It is the evilness of our own hearts that cause all the pain and suffering in this world. What are we doing with our riches and wealth to find cures to diseases....it is God who councils us to GIVE (to help humanity) and it shall be given unto you (you will reap personal benefits for fighting against hunger & disease). John 10:10 speaks of a thief.........who comes to steal, kill, and destroy........and it is not Jesus. He said that He came (and left you and I wise council) that we WOULD have (grab hold of for others and ourselves) LIFE and LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY. Jesus spoke to the storm and commanded it "Peace..........be still!" Jesus would NOT have quited som

How in the world, do you think that you can sue God? That is the most outrageous, stupidist thing that I have ever heard of. As you had, said that God is the one that causes earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, famine, war and terrorists. It is not God that causes it, it is just Mother Nature. What are you Ernie, a complete idiot? Boy you really must be, if you think God is the one that causes it. What is it, is that the first thing that popped into that blank mind of yours?

Posted by: Deborah on Sep 19, 2007 at 10:23 AM
In understanding the point that he is trying to make, he could have accomplished this in a better manner. I am so saddened that anyone, especially our leaders in this country, can mock GOD in any manner. We should be lifting Him up in praise and thanking Him for every breath of life we take and thanking Him for giving us JESUS. You blame all these things on GOD when, if you have ever read the Holy Bible, there is Satan. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.-1 Peter 5:8. Earnie, Do you know Jesus? If you don't, I will pray you find him. And if you do, I will pray that you start believing and asking for forgivness and listening to GOD's word and not the sound of your own voice for direction in life. May GOD Bless your life and help you see clearly.

I'm a tax payer who's money is going to be wasted on this #&@#! Maybe we should all sue Ernie for wasting our money on something so ridiculous!

Hey Nebraska...do you happen to remember when Californian's stood together to get rid of our last Gov. Gray Davis? The California Recall Election of 2003 was quite an undertaking and an achievement. It was the best thing we did for our state. PLEASE research the RECALL by going to www.google.com, type Gov. Gray Davis 2003 in the search engine and read about the CALIFORNIA RECALL ELECTION 2003. Perhaps the state of NE and it's constituents should file a lawsuit against Ernie Chambers...wouldn't that be a hoot? Please take a stand and protect the good name of your state. Omaha, especially has worked very hard to become more of a metropolitan area, with good income and great jobs. Don't let this man set you back 20 years to the "hick state" that no one can find on the map. Take A Stand Nebraska...we are behind you!

Posted by: NT on Sep 19, 2007 at 01:22 AM
Wow, I saw this on the news here in California and I really can't believe it! He is wasting people's time by filing a stupid lawsuit. You can't sue God. Get a brain, Ernie! How dumb can you be? You've gone too far this time, wasting your time and that of other people.

Posted by: Shane on Sep 18, 2007 at 11:26 PM
Why didn't Ernie sue the Devil?

Posted by: Patrick on Sep 18, 2007 at 11:23 PM
Ernie Chambers filed a frivolous lawsuit to bring attention to himself, I mean, to bring attention to frivolous lawsuits. What next? Will he shoot one of his constituents to bring attention to the shootings in North Omaha?

Posted by: Dan on Sep 18, 2007 at 08:25 PM
I think you are representing the people who suck-on the honest taxpayers money. GOD you impress me at how well you have accomplished this. I am shocked how one man can portray the "minority" population so well. Yes, I am talking about the "Minorities who work the system." They would do ANYTHING for a dollar, and you nailed a perfect image of them!

Posted by: nick on Sep 18, 2007 at 07:32 PM
Now Ernie wants to follow the constitution. He's a joke!!! Didn't we vote in term limits a few years ago or did Ernie manage to override the Voters. If he really wants to defend the Constitution how about the 2nd ammendment??

Posted by: Daniel on Sep 18, 2007 at 07:15 PM
God and Religion have been nothing but a sham since, "the days of going to war in the name of GOD." Ernei chambers has a point whether all of you "sheep" want to admit it. Ernie I hope this time the means justify the end result!

Posted by: Kyle on Sep 18, 2007 at 06:47 PM
It's funny. Our senator is sueing God. Meanwhile, there's a shooting a day in Omaha. What does this say about our state's government?

Posted by: Kyle on Sep 18, 2007 at 06:37 PM
Might I ask for what reason is he trying to prove this point? Is he trying to say we should sue the pants off of anyone we think deserves it? I'm confused...

Posted by: Confused on Sep 18, 2007 at 06:02 PM
So let me get this straight...to prove a point about silly lawsuits you file one. So to prove a point on child abuse, do you abuse one? To prove a point on drunk driving do you drive drunk and hope you kill someone? Is this the way to get a message out? 2 wrongs make a right?

Posted by: Elaine on Sep 18, 2007 at 05:05 PM
Let me get this straight, we are trying to get God out of the schools, we can no longer have a prayer at events, etc, but we can sue him. Does this mean it is allowed in court? Court is a public facility. Amazing!!!! This is going to make NEBRASKA look pretty bad. I guess Nebraskans can sue who and whatever they want. I would like him to try and serve those court papers? Wonder how long it will take to get God served?? What a waste of time, taxpayers money and the reputation of Nebraska. Maybe they should do a drug test on him. Was it a hullucination?

Posted by: American Citizen on Sep 18, 2007 at 04:27 PM
Why doesn't he get a life and find better things to do than to try to sue god, he isn't going to win, the lord is to powerful. Ernie doesn't pay any attention neither the reason why they are called "natural" disasters is because there is no cause.

Posted by: Rachael on Sep 18, 2007 at 04:24 PM
This whole story just reaffirms my belief that Mr. Chambers' sole purpose in life is to make the citizens of Nebraska the laughing stock of the whole nation. If he was trying to prove a point, the only point he proved is that we do need to have restrictions placed that would eliminate frivilous lawsuits.

Posted by: Nick on Sep 18, 2007 at 04:14 PM
I love it... It's about time someone did something like this. to show how ridiculous American jurisdiction is. If a "ficus" can run for congress, and "Bush" can be president for second mandate, "Veggie Tales" teach kids... Well I'll sew god as well. We have been turned in to a mindless plants you go Ernie.

More gunfire today, by a school this time and Ernie is busy suing God...pathetic.

Posted by: Jerry on Sep 18, 2007 at 03:24 PM
When I saw this article I realized that Mr. Chambers knew the outcome of his lawsuit as soon as it was filed, for surely he too must watch Boston Legal (they aired such an episode last fall). I haven't read the lawsuit but did Mr. Chambers cite, amoung the defendants (GOD) causes "the very breath he takes, as well."

Posted by: Teacher on Sep 18, 2007 at 03:19 PM
Give me a break, I can't believe this was a headline on Yahoo. I'm pretty sure it's fairly obvious to everyone that lawsuits can be filed over anything. I am a teacher and I hear "I'm going to sue you" said to me or another student at least once a day. Seems like our politicians should be taking stands on more important issues like the environment, education, job training, health care. Not to mention the wars in the Middle East. Grow up Mr. Senator and join the real world.

Posted by: Saint Peter on Sep 18, 2007 at 03:05 PM
I just spoke with God and Ernie, he's not happy with you. He suggests do you some good in YOUR community....let's see if your people listen to you. Stop the violence.

Posted by: Trish M on Sep 18, 2007 at 02:49 PM
If Ernie Chambers thinks God has done all of these things, he had better read his Bible, "Revelations", and really see what God has instore for us sinners. Just because he is saying you can sue anyone, there are better way to prove your point.

Posted by: Delancey on Sep 18, 2007 at 02:23 PM
Where is Ernie's keen sense of justice when it comes to the lives of his constituents. There are real criminals in the streets of North O killing innocent people. Instead of stepping up and suggesting solutions for the community, Ernie is suing God. Way to represent your constituents, Ernie! I'm sure the mothers of the murder victims appreciate you filing this lawsuit as it will make a "real" difference in their lives. You have been in office too long and completely lost touch with reality. I feel sorry for your constituents, you are not helping them at all!

I think this guy is a complete bonafide idiot!!! This made my stomach turn when I heard this on the news. It's getting bad people, get ready. I think that Ernie has gone off his rocker. There have been lawsuits against having Christian things on buildings or in the pledge. But why do you have to take it to this level? He is outright insulting every religion that is out there. I do not think that he even has a chance at reelection if he runs again. Terrorists will use this story as propoganda to encourage their jihad, because he is a US leader, so therefore the US is bad, because they are suing Allah. What he is doing is an outright mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Ernie Chambers is absolutley ridiculous!!! How far will he go for a little publicity? Of course anyone can sue anyone but don't mock God in the process of trying to prove a point! Ernie is like the Rosie Odonnel of politicians- he pokes his nose into issues where it has no business being and then has to blow the whole issue up just so he can get his face in the news. Give it up Ernie! Everyone is laughing at you!!

Posted by: Doris on Sep 18, 2007 at 11:42 AM
Obviouly the senator is tilting at windmills. Do we have a term limit people can serve in the unicameral? We need to have this if we do not have one. Does he expect God to testify in this lawsuit? Fortunately, God loves even Ernie Chambers.

Ok, So I'm in Atlanta... but I will say- thanks to reading these posts... well most of them- that I don't think people in Nebraska are idiots. In fact, I think y'all have a pretty good sense of humor about yourselves! Secondly- unlike a former professor- I never believed that Nebraska was "one of those states that doesn't count, like South Dekota..."- Y'all are cool to me. Third of all- I'd hate to be Ernie because there's nothing like mocking God to incurr his wrath. And lastly- This is the stupidist thing I've ever heard of. He's blaming God for terrorist activites and did anyone notice the ridiculous Dr. Seuessian alliteration? "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornados, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts..." what a moron. That's ok- I don't blame Nebraska.

Why doesn't he do something for the good of Omaha instead of just wasting taxpayers time and money. He's always complaining how there isn't enough attention to the crime in his district, why doesn't he do something about that instead of the frivilous stuff he's known for?

Posted by: L on Sep 18, 2007 at 11:33 AM
my understanding is that this 'lawsuit' is because Chambers is angry about another lawsuit filed because of a sexual assault case in which the victim was not allowed to use 'rape' or 'victim' in her testimony. If true, it seems that Mr. Chambers is really trivializing the sexual assault case and the woman who was the victim

Posted by: Laura on Sep 18, 2007 at 11:26 AM
I certainly hope that whatever judge "hears" this case slaps Ernie with a HUGE fine for a frivolous lawsuit. It is the judge's perogative to do so, and I certainly hope he/she does. Can God countersue Ernie for misuse of the human brain He created and gave Ernie?

Ernie is the modern equivalent of Job; given the precedence of evil and suffering in the world, why shouldn't we hold the Creator accountable for his creation? Yes we cause most of the evil in the world (sans natural disasters), but God created us with our character which seems to have a propensity to do these evil things. Just as you would hold the Creator of Frankenstein at least partly responsible for the monster's horrible actions, we have a right to question the Creator of the world's morality in light of the heinous state of the world. If Ernie's lawsuit helps to bring attention to this theological problem of evil, it will bring an important topic back into discussion. And who knows, maybe (like Job's case), God will come down and try to answer for Himself!

Hey Ernie, the constitution also gives us the right to keep and bear arms. Why are you so eager to use your other rights under the constitution... but attempt to squash others ability to do so? Get a life. How much longer are you in there for? I'm going to start marking the days on the calendar.

Senator Chambers, I have one thing to say to you, I will pray for you you have stepted accross the line. If you read someoe's else Bible for I know you don't have your own, you will fine these happening was wrote about ageages ago in the Bible it coming to pass as the Bible states. Just who do you think you are? You will be on your knees before you die praying to God for forgiveness.

What on earth is with this senator?! Publicity stunts are fine sometimes, but there's a line between publicity and absolute stupidity. Honestly, who on earth is stupid enough to try to waste tax dollars on something like this and expect not to catch huge flak over it? God help the citizens of Nebraska, because this is likely to go down in infamy right next to the Florida election fiasco. Welcome to Nebraska, the state that sued God.

Yup...made national headlines, alright! I lived in Omaha, NE for a short period of time and found many positive qualities. I doubt anyone with any level of intelligence will judge an entire state based upon the actions of Mr. Chambers, whether they agree with his "cause" or not. Don't worry NE...we have our "whack jobs" out here, too. Welcome to judicial lunacy.

Cool. I wondered if G-D existed. Now that he has been recognized as a defendent he will be just like Santa Claus thanks to the Post Office. I agree with the cause and purpose of this suit. Much rather make CNN for this than another shooting.

what an embarassment & what a waste of tax money when is his term limit up....

Posted by: We should all move to Mexico on Sep 18, 2007 at 10:15 AM
This is just an example of what goes on everyday with our government. As our country falls apart. With people losing there jobs and homes. Our officials only have time to prove points, instead of help the people that pay taxes. I think the taxpayers should get our own lawyers. And we should stop paying taxes to prove our point. Now that's the way to prove a point! Our country is ran by idiots like this one!

Posted by: Sandi on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:53 AM
This proves that you have way too much time on your hands! You are such a waste to this community. First you want segregation in the schools, now this...! You will obviously do anything to get attention. Why don't you spend more time on "real" issues? This is how you represent the state of Nebraska? By the way, what's up with your torn sweat shirts? Trying to appear as if you are "down" with the people? Please.....

Posted by: Trish on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:52 AM
Ernie, how DARE you make a mockery of God with this ridiculous lawsuit? The ONLY point that's being made by this is what an idiot you really are. What's the matter?? Craving the center of attention slot again?? Must be running out of ideas. You've been full of idiotic ones in the past but this tops all! In my opinion, you have outstayed your welcome as a Senator representing Nebraska. Hopefully, those that kept voting you in feel the same. I would love to hear those magic words "you're fired" said to you.

I cannot believe this man is in office. Guess what ladies & gents??? Your hard earned tax dollars are being wasted because of this man. He is nothing but an Al Sharpton want to be. He is also a disgrace to everyone in Nebraska. SHAME ON YOU ERNIE for raping the hard working tax paying nebraskans of their money for something stupid. That's right Ernie, you are raping Nebraskans of their hard earned money. Just incase you think I'm wrong, here is the dictionary's interpretation of the word rape: Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice.

Posted by: Susan on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:36 AM
Whatever happened to "Government OF the People and FOR the People?" Ernie - why don't you add that God has allowed the killings in N.O. to occur. That way you do not have to accept any responsibility to act on behalf of your constituents, just pass the blame like you always do.

Posted by: Erin on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:32 AM
You nay-sayers must have pretty lame imaginations! First, this is not the first time someone has filed a lawsuit to make a point. Second, how many lawsuits in American history have made a much bigger impact than anyone had anticipated? Granted, this may not ultimately have a big impact, but can't you at least suspend your harsh judgements until you see where it leads? Finally, how many of you who are so concerned about "wasting" taxpayer dollars have called your representatives demanding to know what happened to the $9 BILLION in Iraq Development Funds that vanished into thin air? Do you care that our representatives, especially those in the executive branch, KNOW that American contractors swindled a huge portion of that away for personal benefit but are choosing not to investigate? Those taxpayer dollars MIGHT have helped move the US toward some version of "success" in Iraq and saved American AND Iraqi lives. Do you think BushCo is as crazy as you accuse Ernie of being??

Ernie Chambers is an embarrassment to our community who is ONLY interested in seeing his face in the news. We are all getting sick and tired of the ongoing political games this man continues to play. Do us all a favor and resign!!!! We need an individual to lead our community not an idiot!!

Posted by: Scott on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:18 AM
Ernie is very intelligent, it is too bad he wastes his talents. Enrie, do something that will help the people you represent instead of playing games with the system. Be relevant.

Posted by: Alice on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:17 AM
I get that he is trying to make a point, but I think he chose the wrong defendant. Does he not care that he might be offending someone? He could've used the tooth fairy...Even though he is trying to make a point, I think most people know that many cases are ridiculous and that something should be done about it, but instead, why doesn't he propose something to change it. How is he fixing the problem by making a stupid lawsuit? In addition, he should consider prioritizing the issues in Nebraska, as I think most people would agree that there are other issues more important than stupid lawsuits. He should think of the big problems, and once those are addressed, then he can think of the little ones like the point he is trying to prove now.

Posted by: Bill on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:09 AM
There certainly are a lot of "saved" Christians out there being awfully judgemental - as usual. Doesn't that little book you tote around have something in it about "judge not, lest..." Oh, wait; you don't want to hear it, because it's not convenient for you at the moment. Yes, it is a frivolous lawsuit. That's the point. When a robber shot by a homeowner can sue the victim, when a woman who was raped can't say what happened for damaging a stodgy old judge's delicate sensibilites, when someone can sue McD's for making them fat, it's time to take notice. We are a litigious society, and there are so many other things we could concentrate on that it's stunts like this that force you to look in the mirror. I've noticed that no one is disputing any of the claims. For an omniscient, omnipotent being who loves us all so very much, there are a lot of things happening to us and our world. Wouldn't a benevolent god with that much power step in to stop it? Don't you think? Maybe?

Posted by: Kim on Sep 18, 2007 at 08:59 AM
Everyone knows there are stupid lawsuits out there and he just did this to get attention. He thinks it was some ingenious plan, like he is so smart, but he really looks like an idiot. What a waste of money. I have never respected this guy. Seems that everything he does is to get attention. If he really wanted to do a good job it wouldn't be about the attention. And oh Ernie is allowed to wear a nasty old tshirt everyday! How disrespectful is that! We are taught to dress the part. Why is it that Ernie thinks he is exception to the rule? When is he done with his term? Let him go be a fruitcake somewhere else-maybe the Fruit of the Loom factory!! Free t-shirts!!

Stop wasting our hard earned tax paying dollars. We should be putting that money to better use like serving steak or lobster to inmates. Come on. What is wrong with this world for the judicial system to even allow it? Some one has too much time on their hands.

Posted by: Mary on Sep 18, 2007 at 08:25 AM
In order to sue someone, shouldn't there be an actual person to defend him or herself in the lawsuit or at least a family member to do so. And what is he actually sueing for? Angel Wings! I think there is a dress code in heaven and he'll need a collar shirt.

If he is trying to prove to us that people file lawsuites over crazy things, we already know this. What a waste of time. I will be glad when Ernie Chambers is a name of the past!

Posted by: Brian on Sep 18, 2007 at 03:29 AM
The worst part of this is that this story had made NATIONAL headlines. Now the rest of the country will be wondering about the intelligence of this state thanks to Ernie. There are frivolous lawsuits and then there is this. The only thing you are going to do is strike up a new battle between the church and the state. There are better thing to focus on Mr. Chambers, how about the rising violence in North Omaha or is that something that you are trying to ignore like it will go away. It is time for you to resign and go to you padded room.

First people of West Council Tucky .......... Omaha makes Omaha look like a cow town. It's amazing that a city of 470,000 can have a Mayberry attitude to all things civic! "Gee sounds expensive, that's for the city." Is this a city? 2nd all of you god, God, etc people taking a census on who is a christian ..... STOP JUDGING PEOPLE ........ YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT IT! ...... now on to Senator Chambers ...... It's about time someone got around to taking God, god, etc to court. If you ask me this God, god, etc has gone unchecked far to long. ( you know his name is on money and he was never even president ) Obviously Senator Ernie Chambers would be committing malfeasance if he didn't sue god, God, etc. Senator Ernie Chambers has a duty to perform here. I find this to be as important, or more important than anything he has expended mental energy on in the past. Senator Chambers constituents should be delighted that this is how he is spending his time.

GOD does not cause disasters, He saves people and their souls from them who decide to take the righteous path, otherwise disasters may be allowed to happen. Obviously Earnie did not do so here with this action. His past actions as well may haunt him in the long run, if not allowed for forgiveness.

Posted by: Bob on Sep 17, 2007 at 11:53 PM
You all miss the point completely. I suggest you read the suit and think about it and his comments. Ernie filed the lawsuit to bring attention to efforts to restrict lawsuits. But, the courts should be open to all of us fools! There should be no restriction by government to only allow suits which serve their interests. So as usual, Ernie is trying to protecting our interests and yet we all throw stones at him and call him a fool. I think we should all reconsider who the fools really are - one who makes a real effort to protect people's rights or the ones who voted him out…

Posted by: Debbie on Sep 17, 2007 at 11:40 PM
I'm with John and Trever below, I think many of you are missing the point. This lawsuit really has nothing to do with religion. Although oftentimes I too don't agree with Senator Chambers and his "tactics", I'm with him on this one. Religious beliefs aside, his point becomes clear. These types of ridiculous cases happen all the time in our court systems, but nobody pays any attention to this waste of tax payer dollars. At least Chambers is smart enough to know the only way to change things is to get people talking....and look what he did!

Posted by: Lyle on Sep 17, 2007 at 11:28 PM
I don't always agree with Ernie, but I greatly respect his strength of conviction and subtle humor. He is unique to actually try to accomplish something meaningful these days, since too often, the only reasons for action is money, money, money. Yet people can rarely see what he is trying to do, or in this case, understand how perfect his suit is to prove his point. I for one would like to see this litigated. GOD has caused far too much pain and suffering in this world and someone must put a stop to it. But if that is not reason enough, then if this helps draw attention to the problem of unjustified or frivolous lawsuits, Ernie has accomplished something for the common good. In reality, Ernie is just the fool on the hill! But if even half of us made half his effort to try to accomplish something we believed in, it would be a far better world.

Posted by: DANO on Sep 17, 2007 at 11:15 PM
For ONCE I agree with Ernie, although he has an odd way of making his point. We know anyone can file a frivolous lawsuit. Now, Ernie, what are you going to do to stop frivolous lawsuits???

Posted by: sara on Sep 17, 2007 at 11:01 PM
Oh good. Something else for the rest of the country to make fun of Nebraska over!

Posted by: Not Anonymous on Sep 17, 2007 at 10:58 PM
You do not have to agree with the man but you have to respect his intelect. His peers do. If you have ever watched a senate session it you can witness that yourself. I believe to the contrary of Anonymous who states "Isn't it funny how our leaders are supposed to be examples for our citizens and young adults?" that Ernie is setting a great example for young adults and citizens. That example is be creative, be a leader, Adress issues that need to be addressed and make sure that when you address an issue you use the laguage that your intended audience can understand. Speak in their language. Go Ernie keep doing what you are doing. No one shines a spotlight like you. You will be missed.

Posted by: Erin on Sep 17, 2007 at 10:49 PM
Isnt Ernie an atheist?? How can he sue God if he doesnt believe in God? I'm an atheist too, but I think he's making all atheists look bad. What an amazingly idiotic thing for him to do! Hopefully the judge who rules on this lawsuit is a very devout catholic who will look at Ernie, laugh (or shake his head in pity) and then declares it to be the most frivoulous lawsuit ever and bang his gavel on the desk, closing the case.

Posted by: Objective View on Sep 17, 2007 at 10:48 PM
What everyone seems to be missing is the fact that the lawsuit has been filed to prove a point. The point is frivilous lawsuits can and will continue to be filed by anyone against anyone for anything. It raises a valid point. The best way to point something out is to provide an example. I think that the whole thing is very ingenious. I believe a lot of people are overlooking the fact that if this case goes further the judge representing the Judicial system would have to admit that God infact does exist and has te potential capability to have the affect mentioned in the suit. If nothing else, there is now national attention given to the whole idea of frivilous lawsuits. I believe that a lot of people will shoot it down as stupid, rediculous a waiste of time and tax payers dollars but how many dollars are actually wasted on real lawsuits of the same nature. People suing McDonalds for hot coffe or making their kids fat. Are you serious?? I believe a lot will be learned. in the end

It's blasphemy, and I'm ashamed he represents Nebraska in any way whatsoever. In my opinion, Ernie doesn't have a respectful bone in his body, except for the bone in his head. My dad, God rest his soul, saw Chambers for what he was many years ago, and Chambers hasn't changed. Please someone show him the way home, and lock him in. Better yet, may he come to Jesus Christ with repentence of his sins. If not, I'm sure he'll love the Tribulation!

Now please take the time to think about what he trying to do before attacking the man! Whomever before me hit it on the head, many many tax dollars are spend everyday in this sue happy world and Ernie is just bring it to light that anyone can sue over anything... This story has now hit the national networks -- it is featured on the main pages of both CNN.com and FoxNews.com. Once again, Mr. Chambers is doing a fabulous job of making Omaha look ridiculous. After wasting the precious time of Nebraska's legislature, that seems to be his most prominent purpose.

To Katie and Trevor - the outrage is over the fact that this is a lawsuit that is wasting taxpayer dollars that could be better used for items like treatment programs, housing assistance or the like. Instead of bashing everyone else that you feel is proving a 'valid' point, why don't you look at the fact that this suit is costing people money and is done for absolutely no reason - what is this 'valid' point that you claim? Read the comments again for the 'god' part is a minor point.

Posted by: `Pat' on Sep 17, 2007 at 08:18 PM
Is Ernie Chambers a christian? Maybe not. If you-all remember right, God(Jesus) was already in a court-room setting 2007 years ago. Christ won in the long run. True? It had to happen that way because the only one who could satisfy the demands of `justice was Christ Jesus himself. `Justice required a perfect death as a punishment/penalty for sin. No one but Jesus could do. A sinner certainly couldn't have done it. Jesus wasn't a sinner. He sacrificed himself for you & me. He is willing to be gracious and merciful if we will repent and bring forth fruits meet for repentance. Lawsuits are about right & wrong, life & death. Remember, Christ was approachable but only to a point. There were some things he wouldn't allow. I'm sure, too many law-suits was one of them. It stands to reason: we must be wise and decide how many is too many. Should we thank, Ernie? Afterall, we are all talking about it now, aren't we? North Omaha take note: We all must be more like Jesus. Overcome evil with good.

How was service on Defendant perfected? With recent court rulings, removal of the ten commandants from the court houses, God can not appear in court, to answer the charges against him. How would Ernie handle it if, the system he is using to seek remedy, would deny him the chance to appear and answer the charges against him. Ernie is Ernie and always will be, if it makes sense, don't do it.

I think it's also funny that James Martin Davis is representing God, though it doesn't suprise me.

I thought I had seen and heard it all from Sen. Chambers, but his lawsuit against God takes the prize. Do the people of the 11th District that he represents figure this frivolous lawsuit will benefit them in any way? What a waste of taxpayer’s time and money. I know he is not seeking monetary compensation from this suit, but someone has to file, document and act on it and they all get paid something! I am sure there are more constructive ways he in which he could be earning his salary than by trying to get his name in the headlines once again. But I am glad to see he has changed his religion and discarded his Agnostic beliefs by asking “God” to stop, change, and control the things he listed in the lawsuit; it makes me think that he does believe there is a higher authority than himself.

I find that wrong to sue God. Make a pointless lawsuit against something else. Keep God our Lord out of this ridiculous matter.

It is my opinion that the Nebraska judicial system has stooped to Mr. Chambers level by even considering this action. If a state representative wants to waste his time and my taxpayer dollars putting forth trivial lawsuits, maybe Mr. Chamber should consider stepping down from his office. Theree are way to many issues far more important than this. The fact he would even contemplate, much less carry out this blatant act of disregard for his constituents, demostrates Mr. Chambers is lacking the intelect necessary to be a true leader. The 11th Legislative District should call for his resignation, immediately. The Unicameral needs to close the loop on this type of action.

Most people responding seem to be missing the point that Ernie Chambers is making. So far no tax dollars have been spent on this frivolous lawsuit, and basicly no tax dollars will be spent except for about 5 minutes of a judges time, time that the judge would have been on the bench any way, to dismiss the lawsuit as the court not having jurisdiction. But the point that anyone could be filing these types of lawsuits and actually take up tax dollars is well worth the effort. I dont always agree with Ernie but I would have to say I agree with him this time.

All the crime and violence in North Omaha, all the innocent people who have lost their lives, live in fear, and suing God is Ernie Chambers' priority? I have not heard from him on the violence, but this...this matters to him. North Omaha deserves better than this man.

I think there are better things to do with time then hearing about a moron sueing god and the money wasted on nonsense!!!That could be used on more important things like schools, crimes and helping others in need!!!Who do u think u are sueing someone that brought u here and helped u out in this life???

Would you all stop sulking Chambers is proving a valid point and should be praised for his attempts to stand up for the people. It disappoints me how ignorant you all are being.

I think Senator Chambers exists to call attention to himself, and he does so by continually being contrary. I find it insulting that he thinks his constituents need him to file a ridiculous, frivolous, lawsuit to realize that anyone can sue anyone. All he proved to me is that he has way, way, too much time on his hands.

Question ... Who is the bigger embarrassment to Nebraska, Mr Chambers or Mr Callahan?

Posted by: matt on Sep 17, 2007 at 05:51 PM
he 1 needs a straight jacket. or maybe to stand on a street in n omaha so he can catch someone who wont snitch

No matter what Ernies' reasons are for filing this law suit, he is not aware of the power of our Lord. I personally would find anyone else on the face of this earth to file a bogus law suite against, not The Lord. He is the only one that has the power to take your life and condemn you to hell! I would not be stating,'come out, come out where ever you are'. Oh, He is here alright. If I were you,[thank You, Lord, that I am not] I would be looking for a place to hide. On second thought, don't bother. He knows where you are!

Initially I wasn't going to waste my time with a response to this blatent stupidity. However as a taxpayer, I'm outraged. This is a sickening misuse of our precious tax dollars. How can anyone feel that they are in any way serving the public or thier constituents by wasting the time of our public servents and taxpayer money in such a deplorable way. Ernie, I feel a public apology to all tax paying Nebraskans is in order. Swallow your pride, put aside that enormous ego of yours, and tell the good people of this state that you're sorry and will pick up the bill for this stupid move you made.

Can you say Loon! Doesn't he have anything better to do with his time? He's not only wasting his time, but the time of many others.

ernie chambers is always trying to get his name in the news and this is just anoher one of his ways of doing it..kind of sad that he has stooped this low

And people voted for this man?

Posted by: Brandon on Sep 17, 2007 at 05:06 PM
I can only say one thing about this: LOL! This is so amazing, that I'm almost motivated on filing a lawsuit against Satan.

Ernie needs help for his mental problems! His district needs to take a good look at who is representing them. He should spent his time doing something real! I am glad I do not live in NE! I just work here and unfortunately some of my taxes from working in NE go towards paying his salary! YIKES!

Did anyone actually read the law suit that posted or is everyone basing their opinion on the reporters story? I find it funny that so many people are outraged over him "suing GOD". Would it have been different if he sued one of us to prove a point? Or if One of us got sued while being in an accident that was not our fault, or divorce cases that the couple spends tons of time in court fighting over a stove or who gets the cat. These types of cases happen everyday, they clog the court system and cost all of us "workers" money. Not to mention he has a valid point about how much hate is created from religion and peoples unfaltering faith in a God. If you dont believe, read the anger directed at Mr.Chambers over this simple act of attempting to address a point that needs to be addressed.

Ernie is only suing because he made yet another headline. Now the media is going to run with this stupid story for as long as they can. Ernie Chambers should crawl into a hole somewhere before God has his final say.

Posted by: Kim on Sep 17, 2007 at 04:46 PM
Oh please. This has to be the biggest waste of time and the biggest insult to the people of Omaha. This is the most irresponsible, ridiculous and downright dumb thing Ernie Chambers has done in order to keep himself in the limelight. Grow up Ernie!

Posted by: Nancy on Sep 17, 2007 at 04:44 PM
I could run around with my hands up in the air screaming like an idiot to draw attention to myself, but do I? No. Get a life Ernie and quit wasting our money.

As a Christian, this is my comment to Mr. Chambers: "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap." Galations 6:7 "New American Standard Bible.

I just got off work and I am going to my second job, when I read this. Thank you Ernie Chambers for wasting my tax dollars that I pay every two weeks to the good ole government. I'm so glad I work so hard for my money to support my family and I can fund Senator Ernie Chambers in his personal points . What a waste.
