An Omaha landlord gets creative to fill space by offering two years of free rent to potential tenants.
Inside the "Grow with Me" daycare near 122nd and Military, you'll find nineteen little minds that Jennifer Schmaderer and her team care for.
"We love being around kids and it's a great opportunity to help grow their minds."
There is a great opportunity for growth around them too. Next to the daycare there is an entire mall of empty space. The mall sat empty for five years until broker Spencer Lombardo pitched what seemed like a crazy idea to the mall's owner.
"I knew how important it was to give the businesses an opportunity to grow. So, we put up the two years free rent sign and got a lot of calls on it," said Lombardo.
The two-years free rent sign quickly ended Jennifer Schmaderer's search for space. She opened her daycare last month.
"We've been looking for over a year and then we came upon the two-years free rent and it was a steal for a business owner trying to start up a business to gain some clients."
Lombardo says the mall's owner is betting that by the time the daycare's five year lease is up, they'll be too successful to look elsewhere.
