An obstacle course is something you usually find in a rural setting, but the NorthStar Foundation and Outward Bound brought one to Omaha Thursday to teach high-risk kids the ropes.

The Hitchcock High Ropes Challenge Course at 52nd and Ames was built and is owned by the NorthStar Foundation for the use of Outward Bound Omaha. The course stands about 43 feet tall.

Ande Frasier and Riley Griffy are in the Outward Bound Challenge program and know they can deal with what this obstacle course teaches them. “It’s supposed to help you overcome your fears like heights, teamwork, it’s getting our of your comfort zone,” said Griffy.

"Teaches you how not to be afraid of things, mostly your comfort zone, help to get to know people,” said Frasier.

The young men believe if they can handle this, there’s a lot of other things they can deal with, like applying for a job, going to college or helping other young men, things that may be out of their comfort zone.

Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray is an Outward Bound alum and says this ropes course is good for the community and good for youngsters.

“It gives young people the opportunity to think outside the box, to act differently, to think differently. They need to be stretched and this is an opportunity to do that.”

For Riley and Ande, it was an opportunity to stay out of trouble by keeping their feet off the ground and setting their sights a little higher.
