Cash Infusion Heading To Disabled Nebraskans

Nebraska government officials say a big infusion of money is helping hundreds of people with developmental disabilities who have been waiting for services.

State lawmakers last year set aside $10.5 million to help whittle away at a long waiting list of people wanting services to help live with disabilities, such as mental retardation. Officials with the state Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday that the money is helping 833 people.

Jodi Fenner, director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities, said those who were on the waiting list the longest got services first and that some have opted for less-expensive help.

Fenner says that has allowed the state to stretch the dollars and help more people.
