A nationwide shortage of highway paint is making it difficult for Nebraska crews to get started repainting streets and highways.
The Nebraska Department of Roads' Cindy Jelinek says the main suppliers of highway paint are having trouble keeping up with demand because of cuts they made during the recession.
The shortage also led to a sharp increase in the price of highway paint.
So some painting projects that had been scheduled to begin in March are likely to be delayed until at least June.
Jelinek says the department is trying to prioritize projects to repaint the roads with the greatest need. But most roads in the state need to be repainted annually.
