We're getting a taste of summer this week and many already have their air conditioners running. For some, that's a luxury they can't afford. The American Red Cross is offering free electric fans to anyone in need.
Organizers are giving first priority to the elderly, disabled and households with small children. The fans were purchased through the Energy Assistance Fund. There's a one fan per household limit and you're ineligible if you've already received a fan in previous years.
"We received about 500 fans from the state last year and we only gave away about 250, so these are still last year's fans,” says Kate Ellrich with the Red Cross. “It was just a cool summer last summer."
Those interested in a fan need to bring a photo ID and a piece of mail to indicate their current address to the Red Cross office near 80th Street and West Center Road.
Officials also want to remind you they will help families pay utility bills this summer. Last year, the Red Cross provided $245,000 in assistance.
