John Baroni watched as police supervised the clean-up of a neighboring business a block off Main Street in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
Baroni said, “I spent some time on the city council so I know what they are gong through. None of us like to do anything we told to do.”
Police in Plattsmouth have been given the responsibility of investigating and enforcing code violations. In 2009 345 code notices were sent out and police took action on 11 violations. This year seven code actions are pending. One yesterday has gone to the clean-up stage. An old repair garage with motors, an air conditioner and even a toilet among items left a back lot. Police brought in a clean-up crew and the property owner will be billed the cost.
Chief Brian Paulsen said, “The uniform brings more respect and people realize the city is serious about it plus the officer embrace it.”
The clean-up yesterday included several barrels partially filled with what appeared to be oil. The contractor hired by the city will take care of proper disposal.
