Storms tumbled through the heartland again on Tuesday and authorities say a tornado was likely to blame for damage in Uehling, Nebraska, just north of Fremont. Scattered reports of wind damage have also been recorded.
The photo, by Timothy Kephart, was shot at 192nd and Center as the storm rolled into Omaha.
Emergency management officials say a tornado is believed to have touched down in Uehling around 5 p.m.
A softball team was practicing at a ball field as the storm approached but everyone made it to safety before the storm hit. Bleachers that once stood along the third base line wound up in right field while the bleachers along the first base line stayed put. Both were bolted down.
Kitty Dierks was in Uehling at the time and says, "My mom called me from Logan, Iowa and told me to get in the basement, there's a tornado... and by the time I got a snack for the kids, and got their shoes back on, we were at the kitchen door, and the windows started rattling, the house started shaking, and I looked out my picture window and there it was. You could see the spinning and it does sound like a freight train, they're not lying when they say that."
Dierks says they went into the basement and huddled near the washer and dryer.
Authorities also had reports of downed trees and power lines.
Wind toppled a semi near Mondamin, Iowa and wind speeds were clocked up to 60 miles-per-hour in Saunders County between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
A cold front pushing through the area triggered the storms.
Two tornadoes hit central Iowa, causing only minor damage as the twisters avoided heavily populated areas.
Mindy Albrecht, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, says authorities reported a tornado at 7 p.m. outside Coon Rapids in Carroll County, where telephone poles were downed and a barn blew over.
No major injuries were reported.
Albrecht says another twister was reported 20 minutes later east in Jefferson in Greene County, but there was no damage.
