A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Adair and northern Adams counties in Iowa until 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Murray Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief was having his Monday morning coffee, saw smoke, investigated and found a mobile home on fire.
Chris Spangler radioed in the call and Murray units responded quickly and were able to limit fire damage mainly to a bedroom of the structure at 9707 1st Avenue, the residence just to the north of the 75 Mart off Rock Bluff Road.
It was tense for firefighters at first. “There were cars in the driveway, we thought somebody might be in there, so we did a ‘search and rescue,’” said Spangler.
But about 30 minutes later, it was learned the two adults and young child residing there had already left and firefighters concentrated on getting the fire out.
There was smoke damage throughout the structure. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause. The Red Cross assisted the family.
