John Morrell & Co. is closing its pork processing plant in Sioux City, Iowa. It comes two weeks earlier than originally planned, ending jobs for all 1,450 employees at one of the city's largest employers.
The subsidiary of Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield Foods announced in January the plant would close April 20.
Workers told KCAU-TV this week that they were told Thursday would be the last day for slaughter operations.
Workers say they will be paid until April 20.
In an e-mail Wednesday to the Sioux City Journal, Smithfield spokeswoman Keira Ullrich said April 20 remains the date for "permanently" closing the plant. She didn't respond to questions over the status of the slaughter and fabrication operations.
Smithfield cited the age of the 52-year-old plant and the economy in announcing the closing.
