Nebraska farmers are starting their spring fieldwork thanks to last week's warm, dry weather across most of the state.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday that many farmers have begun applying fertilizer, disking and preparing machinery for planting.

Winter wheat is also starting to grow, and rangeland is starting to green up.

About 60 percent of the wheat crop rated in good or excellent condition. That's less than last year's 64 percent good or excellent rating.

About 15 percent of the oats crop has been planted, which is behind the average of 25 percent planted by this time of year.

The USDA says spring calving is about 75 percent done.
