Nebraska Inmates Have Access To Social Security Numbers

A federal audit shows some Nebraska inmates are part of a prison work program that give them access to other people's Social Security numbers.

State corrections director Bob Houston says 12 to 18 inmates have access to the information through a data-entry program at the Correctional Center for Women in York.

Houston says there have been no reported incidents of stolen identities by the inmates. He says the inmates are under constant supervision and that none has computer- or identity theft-related convictions.

The Social Security Administration's audit shows Nebraska is among eight states where inmates have access to Social Security numbers.

The others are Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia.
