Storm victims settle in

A | A | A

Two years after being forced out by Hurricane Katrina, the Sauer family once again has a place to call home.

Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County handed the Sauers the keys to their new home in Bellevue Sunday.

The family moved here after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Many of the volunteers who helped build the home joined in the celebration.

Richard Sauer said, "When we first realized that we were not going to go back home, it was devastating. And then we decided to stay and we knew we had a choice to either succeed or fail. We checked into the Habitat for Humanity program and we said you know let's do this. And we decided to stay here and make Nebraska our new home."

Just a few houses down, Habitat for Humanity also dedicated a home that has been purchased by Sharon Taylor. Taylor and her two children had been living in a run-down trailer in Plattsmouth.

Habitat for Humanity is a GREAT organization. People are not just given a house, they must work and pay and keep the property up. What a wonderful program. It teaches responsibility and gives the joy of ownership and hard work to many. Blessings to Habitat and good luck to the new owners!
