The National Science Foundation has given a competitive grant for nearly $590,000 to the University of Iowa.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley on Tuesday announced the funding and said in a news release that it will pay for a research project called "Joint Influences on Perceived Vulnerability and Behavior."

The senator's office says every year thousands of Iowa groups, including colleges and universities, apply for federal government competitive grants and loans.
