Firefighters returned to the scene of a house fire when flames re-ignited Monday morning.
It took about an hour to get the fire at 152nd and Westchester Circle, southeast of 156th and West Dodge Road, under control. Debris again flared up just after 4 a.m.
The house was significantly damaged when fire initially broke out in the kitchen Sunday evening. Bobbi Jo Broyles lives there with her mother. Despite the loss of their possessions, crews were able to reunite them with their dogs, which were outside at the time of the first blaze.
A neighbor called Bobbi Jo at work Sunday, telling her to come home. She raced home with her mind racing right along with her. “Everything. Are my dogs okay? Is everybody okay?”
When she arrived she found her street blocked by fire trucks. Then she saw her home. Smoke billowed from the holes in the roof firefighters had cut to attack the flames.
Bobbi Jo was still waiting to hear about her dogs. “You have no idea how hard it is.”
The one person who did was her mother Jaimi, who stood by and watched as firefighters tried to salvage what remained of the home. “I don't know what to do next."
It's often hard to find happiness in a fire's aftermath, but there was plenty of that in a reunion that took place nearby. Firefighters brought Bobbi Jo to her two dogs, Zeus and Sarge. They ran around wildly, obviously excited to finally see familiar faces. “Sarge, the bigger dog, ended up breaking one of his nails so he's bleeding a little bit, but he's fine."
Now a mother and daughter face some tough decisions. “Now what do you do? What am I supposed to do? Where am I going to go?”
The fire started in the kitchen, but the cause still under investigation. The dogs normally stay inside, but Sunday they were sick so they were left outside. That may be the only reason the dogs survived.
Bobbi Jo was renting the home so she'll be looking for another place to live for now.
