Nebraska's governing body for high school sports won't have to open its records or meetings to the public.

On Friday, lawmakers voted to postpone consideration until the last day of the session a measure (LB1021) that would have required the Nebraska School Activities Association to be more open, effectively killing the bill.

Many lawmakers said the state shouldn't meddle in the affairs of a private nonprofit, which the group is, or get involved in school activities.

State Senator Bill Avery of Lincoln introduced a bill and argued that the group gets tax money, so should be held accountable by the public and not just by the schools it serves.

Some parents have complained that NSAA has denied them access to
records.
