Omaha and Council Bluffs have teamed up to try to bring ultra high-speed internet to the metro.
Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and Council Bluffs Mayor Tom Hanafan are working together in response to Google. The company has what is called a Request for Information or RFI regarding the opportunity to deploy their Fiber Project.
What is ultra high-speed internet? Google's documents describe it as internet speeds that would be “100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today.”
“This is an outstanding opportunity for Omaha and our entire region to benefit from new technology,” Mayor Suttle said in a news release. “Bringing Google Fiber to Omaha and Council Bluffs could mean the addition of more Google jobs and the potential to be the first cities nationwide to pilot a brand new Google product.”
“Our regional approach to the RFI will help our cities stand out in what is sure to be a highly competitive selection process,” Mayor Hanafan said in the same news release. “The benefits of bringing Google Fiber to the Metro area would be significant, providing opportunities for individuals and businesses to have access to the fastest internet speeds available. It would be a great asset to our entire region.”
The city of Carter Lake is also partnering with the project.
The communities have already built a facebook page looking for support. It's called the GoogleFiberOmahaCouncilBluffs.
Google Fiber RFI also offers residents and community groups to nominate their community and even create YouTube videos to show how we would use ultra high-speed internet if the company chose to build the network here.

The search giant site describes it this way: "Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people."
Nominations are accepted through March 26.
