A plan to boost the pay of high-performing teachers in Nebraska hit a wall of opposition Wednesday in the Legislature, despite support from major educational groups in the state.
Lawmakers stopped short of voting on the bill (LB1014). Its sponsor said opponents were trying to kill it with a filibuster. Among opponents' concerns is that school districts would not fairly distribute the money and that it was not known how much money would be available.
The bill would create a teacher-pay fund with money from wind and solar energy leases on land owned by the state Board of Educational Lands and Funds.
Supporters include the state Department of Education, the Nebraska Association of School Boards and the statewide teachers union.
