The blue, state-issued signs along Nebraska highways someday might point drivers to more than restaurants, lodging, fuel and campgrounds.
Lawmakers on Wednesday gave first-round approval to a bill (LB926) that would allow tourist attractions to be included on the signs. Supporters say it will help boost tourism by getting motorists off the highway path to see more of the state.
As originally written, the bill would have allowed just wineries to be named on the signs. But it was amended to allow attractions of regional significance.
Those attractions would have to be open eight hours a day; wineries just 20 hours a week.
