The Nebraska income-tax form has a checkoff spot so taxpayers can easily contribute to wildlife and habitat conservation.
Line 41 on the Form 1040N lets individuals donate all or part of their tax refunds to the Wildlife Conservation Fund.
The fund provides money to manage nongame and endangered species in the state. Projects include education programs, research on
long-billed curlews and river otters and restoration of tall grass prairie.
The state says that last year more than 11,800 taxpayers contributed a total of nearly $91,000 through the checkoff program for the 2008 tax year. That was down 6 percent from the 2007 tax year.
