Update: Omaha Police Reopen Dodge Street

Dodge Street has been reopened after being closed from 144th Street to the Elkhorn River due to dangerous driving conditions.

Officials said the heavy winds, blowing snow, poor visibility and slick areas contributed to many accidents and was endangering drivers.

"I was headed west and then hit a patch of black ice and slid out of control and went into the embankment,” said Tony Irwin of Omaha.

“Yeah, we saw him go off, we experienced this about a half a mile down the road, it's black ice, then the heavy wind just kind of pushes the car, it's pretty bad,” said Cody Jorgensen of Omaha.

During the closure, officers were able to assist and remove disabled vehicles from the roadway. State highway officials were able to add much needed salt and brine solutions to treat the roads and make them more easily passable.

Officials are still urging drivers to use caution while navigating streets, especially on interstate and rural roads.
