Gov. Dave Heineman is encouraging Nebraskans to file their state, individual income tax returns online to help them and the state save money.
Both short and long forms can be filed for free by most taxpayers who submitted tax returns last year.
They can be filed awww.revenue.ne.gov.
Last year, 70 percent of all Nebraska individual income tax returns were filed online.
A decade ago, the state had to hire 150 temporary workers to process tax returns.
Last year, 60 were needed and the state expects to need just 30 workers this year.
Taxpayers owed refunds who file online and choose to have their refunds returned via direct deposit usually have the money deposited in seven-to-10 business days.
