Des Moines police are investigating the death of a 72-year-old woman who may have spent four days on the floor of her home because she thought calling an ambulance was too expensive.
According to The Des Moines Register, officials say medics found JoAnn Knutson dead on the floor Tuesday afternoon.
Her husband, Richard Toews, told police she fell last Friday. He tried to lift her, then cared for her by giving her food and water as she remained on the floor. Toews says he called an ambulance Tuesday afternoon when he tried to wake his wife and she didn't respond.
Police say an autopsy did not reveal signs of violence.
