We've seen them in movies, there's even a TV show out about them, and now they're coming to Omaha. We're talking about concierge doctors, and they're not just for the rich and famous.
A trip to the doctor can be a good experience or bad. The same can be said for a doctor-patient relationship. But who hasn't, at some point, felt like just a number or gotten frustrated dealing with a different on-call doctor after hours or felt like your doctor appeared for only a few minutes during your entire office visit?
Enter Members.MD, a new concierge doctors group started right here in Omaha.
Dr. Joel Bessmer with Members.MD says, "this is the type of medicine that I think many of us dreamed of practicing when we thought about going into medicine. It is getting to know your patients, developing a relationship with your patients, spending time with your patients and dealing with their healthcare needs."
Dr. Bessmer tells us one way this is done is by reducing the amount of patients a Member.MD doctor sees. Bessmer says a typical primary care physician can see around 2,000 patients annually. A Member.MD doctor will see no more than 400 patients.
But the service comes at an annual price. Dr. Bessmer says, "in the first level the patient pays a set amount of $2500 and that gives them 24/7 access to their doctor, 365 days a year." And it's $4,000 if you want your doctor to follow you to the hospital for care.
So you can't make it in for an office visit? On occasion, Members.MD doctors will come to you.
Dr. Bessmer says, "I spend my day seeing patients and solving their problems and visiting them in the hospital and occasionally in their home, occasionally in the nursing home and even occasionally at their business if that's what it requires.
One note, there are no pediatricians in this group. It's mainly adult care.
The first clinic opens up on February 1st at 90th and Dodge, with hopes to open a second clinic within the next six to nine months.
