The slick, snowy conditions resulted in plenty of crashes around the metro Saturday. Omaha Police will not be able to respond to minor property damage collisions until further notice.
As long as vehicles can be moved, Officer Jacob Bettin asks that drivers exchange information and contact their insurance companies. He also asks that people not call 911 for vehicles blocking driveways.
Even police officers are finding a tough go of it in their cruisers, so the department has rented sport utility vehicles with four-wheel drive during this storm.
"The rented SUVs don't have the emergency equipment sirens and lights,” says Officer Michael Pecha. “Their main responsibility is just responding to radio calls for assistance and calls of that nature."
Two people were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center following a two-car crash at the intersection of Saddle Creek and Dodge Street just before 1 a.m. Their injuries were not thought to be serious.
