Train rams unoccupied car.
The Cassgram reports that Cass County sheriff’s deputies, Nebraska State Patrol troopers and Greenwood Fire and Rescue responded to the railroad crossing at Main and Elm in Greenwood about 3:15am Wednesday.
A 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup was left abandoned along the railroad tracks and was struck by a BNSF train. An attempt to locate the suspected driver, 42-year-old Donald S. Butler Jr. of Denton, NE, was made, however Butler fled the scene on foot and was unable to be located at the time of the accident, said Sheriff Wm. C. Brueggemann. Scanner reports indicate Butler contacted the sheriff’s office about 3½ hours later.
Investigation indicated that Butler attempted to drive next to the tracks and the vehicle became stuck in the snow. The incident remains under investigation.
