Omaha firefighters had to deal with more than just smoke and flames at two fires early Wednesday morning. The bitter cold temperatures created icy conditions as they attacked two fires near Ralston.
Crews were called to a fire at the Wentworth Townhomes just before 1 a.m. Smoke was pouring out of one unit at 87th and S Plaza.
Fearing the fire would spread to the roof, some firefighters approached the blaze from ladders, but the flames were knocked down before they could spread out of the original unit.
Everyone was able to escape the fire and other residents were able to return to their apartments. Several cats that lived in the apartment died.
No word on what caused the blaze. Damage is estimated at $45,000.
About an hour before the fire at Wentworth, firefighters were busy at a home near 90th and Berry Street, just west of Ralston High School.
A family of three was home at the time and all managed to get out safely. The fire started in the kitchen and was put out in a matter of minutes.
