Council Bluffs Police say a man arrested after a series of attempted bank robberies Tuesday is the same man wanted for holding up the Frontier Savings Bank Monday with a hatchet.

Police say 21-year-old Larry Burns and an accomplice, 52-year-old James Lunsford, attempted to rob three more banks Tuesday, all on Broadway, but they never got away with any money.

“They had a hatchet they were carrying around with them,” said Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Dave Dawson. “It is my understanding at this point that they hadn't displayed that hatchet at any of 'em. They saw what they thought was a blunt object they were carrying, but they could not describe for sure what that object was.”

Sgt. Dawson says the suspects' weapon of choice was unique. “In all my years I've done this I've never, ever run across someone who has attempted to rob a bank with a hatchet. So I'd say this would be my first.”

The last robbery attempt was at the Telco Triad Community Credit Union at 25th and Broadway around noon. Employees, aware of Monday's robbery, were on the lookout for anyone suspicious and called police when it appeared someone was casing the bank.

Police say the two were spotted nearby and a pursuit began, which ended at 40th and G streets with the help of stop-sticks.

“We were extremely happy that we were able to get this resolved, especially since they started yesterday with getting one bank and then making numerous attempts today to get additional banks,” said Sgt. Dawson. “It's nice to get rid of it.”

The duo face a number of charges, including four counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of first-degree robbery.

Burns was seen on surveillance tape Monday at the Frontier Savings Bank at 23rd Avenue and the South Expressway. Police say Burns and Lunsford got away with a small amount of cash.

The U.S. Bank at 34th Avenue and the South Expressway was also robbed Tuesday afternoon, but it is not related to these arrests. A suspect is being sought for that holdup.
