Former Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey unveiled the street signs bearing his name at a dedication Thursday afternoon.
Fahey told the crowd inside the Ruth Sokolof Theatre that he appreciates the honor. "It's thrilling to see your name up there."
Omaha's longest serving modern day mayor pulled a rope attached to a sheet covering a sign at 14th and Webster. Mayor Jim Suttle led the countdown.
"Mike Fahey Street" is a permanent name change of Webster from 10th-17th Street.
"I didn't do this for the fame or the expectation that a street would be named for me. I did it because I love this city and its people," said Fahey. "The street will only bare one name. The accomplishments aren't mine alone."
Creighton University's Father Schlegel and Union Pacific's Jim Young asked the city for the name change to honor Fahey for his downtown accomplishments, especially the 25-year contract to host the College World Series in the new downtown baseball stadium.
