Water Tower Brought Down

A demolition crew made quick work of taking down what was believed to have been Nebraska’s oldest in-use water tower early Tuesday morning in Plattsmouth.

Crews used the same principle as someone cutting down a large tree, explained Plattsmouth Public Works Superintendent Gary Hellwig. A notch was made in one side, a jack was positioned on the opposite side and a torch-cutting operation came around both sides toward the notch. (See a picture of the tower falling provided by Hellwig at www.cassgram.com.)

The removal of the 122-year-old tower and the erection of Plattsmouth’s new 500,000 gallon north water tower are costing $839,000. The Plattsmouth City Council awarded the bid to Caldwell Tanks of Louisville, Kentucky. Caldwell now has one year to complete the project.
