The close-knit community of Clarinda, Iowa is mourning the loss of a woman and her teenage cousin, killed when a semi hit the go-cart they were riding in northwest of town Saturday afternoon.
The go-cart was pulling out of a residential driveway along a dirt road called Q Avenue and turned in front of the semi just before 3 p.m. The semi hit the go-cart killing both riders, ages 29 and 16.
Their names have not been released. The truck driver, who is from Clarinda, wasn't injured.
"We come up over the hill and my goodness we saw all of the lights blinking and everything was blocked off,” said neighbor Darlene Wagoner. “I presume they went out of the driveway to go back in and they didn't make it.”
The driver who ran into them is a farmer who lives up the road. He was hauling corn when the accident happened. Channel 6 News spoke with him on his farm Sunday. He described the experience as "the worst day of his life.”
“Paul is a very nice guy and I know how good he drives because he comes by here every day with corn.” Wagoner knows Paul and knows the woman and girl who were killed. "Empty. I mean your heart just hurts, both for the family and for Paul.”
The semi driver said he was driving below the speed limit when the accident occurred. The man's friends said a semi loaded full of corn is difficult to stop quickly without it jackknifing.
