An Omaha man is out nearly $4,000 after he sent money to a Canadian pair after learning he won a $1,500,000 sweepstakes prize.

According to police reports the man received notice that he had won the sweepstakes on July 27th.

He was advised to deposit an enclosed check in the amount of $3,990 in his personal checking account. He was told that would pay for taxes. He was also instructed to use Western Union to make payments and fax the receipts.

The man went to a bank and asked workers if the check was legitimate. He reported to police he was told it appeared to be an actual check.

He then deposited the check and sent $2,920 to an Andrew Nutman and $800 to a Brett Stagman, both allegedly of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The man reported he was contacted by the suspects and told them the money was on the way.

He has not received his sweepstakes winnings.

The man has since hired an attorney and is tracking the routing numbers of the money orders sent through Western Union.
