One person was killed and several others were seriously injured when a car plunged off an Interstate 480 overpass and crashed onto the 30th Street ramp to Highway 75 Thursday morning.
Accident investigators say that the vehicle swerved on the overpass, crashed through the guardrail, hit nose-first on the pavement 75-feet below and rolled to a stop.
The driver of the car, 45-year-old Carlotta Phillips, was killed and four other people were hurt. Theodore Dorrall was listed in critical condition Thursday night. Michael Henks and Venessa Eiland had been upgraded to fair condition. Lonnie Phillips was listed in serious condition.
Pam Nared drove by the accident scene just moments after the 10 a.m. crash.
She says, "Three big guys pulled the doors open and started grabbing people out of the back and bringing them over, putting them in the grass."
Robert Bosiljevac, with the Omaha Fire Department says, "We're probably most fortunate that traffic moving on the lower level was not encountered by any debris or possibly falling on top of them."
Firefighters had to cut two of the five victims out of the twisted wreckage.
Area traffic was shut down while the debris was cleared.
