An off-duty Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy was killed in a Sarpy County traffic accident Sunday night. The victim is identified as 36-year-old Shad Nicks of Omaha.
The crash happened at approximately 9:20 p.m. at Highway 6 and Giles Road.
Investigators say that Nicks was riding a motorcycle southbound on Highway 6 when he was hit, nearly head-on, by a northbound Oldsmobile driven by 27-year-old Heather Henning of Papillion.
Investigators say that Henning's car crossed the centerline and struck the motorcycle.
Nicks was transported to UNMC via medical helicopter. He later died.
Henning was transported by ambulance to UNMC. She was treated and released.
After her release from the hospital Henning was arrested and booked in the Sarpy County jail on charges of Felony Motor Vehicle Homicide and Driving While Intoxicated.
Court records in Iowa and Nebraska show Henning had her license revoked in January for failing to pay a speeding ticket in Iowa.
On May 5th, Papillion police stopped her for driving 47 mph in a 25 mph zone.
They also ticketed her for driving on a suspended license.
Two days later, Henning paid the past due speeding ticket and had her license reinstated just six days before the deadly crash that claimed Deputy Nicks’ life.
Deputy Nicks had two young sons and a newborn daughter. His four-year-old was to have celebrated his birthday on Monday.
Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Jim Maguire says, "He (Nicks) was very family-oriented. Everything was about his kids. He just had this 18-day-old baby that he just adored. He finally got his girl. He was always hoping to have a girl and he got one. He got into law enforcement for all the right reasons. It wasn't an ego thing. It was, what am I going to do to help somebody out?"
Services for Deputy Nicks are pending.
Donations for his family can be made at the Omaha Police Federal Credit Union at 3003 S. 82nd Avenue, Omaha, NE. 68124.
