Road debris ended up leaving some motorists facing costly repairs last week but the responsible party is stepping up to take the sting out of the bills.
An oil streak on South 180th came from Sandy Hansen's van after she hit a150-pound weight that had fallen off a truck.
"It hit really hard," Hansen said. "I could smell oil right away. The engine was damaged beyond repair."
Jim Storms ran over the same road debris, damaging his vehicle.
After we showed the heavy hazard that had fallen in the middle of a busy street, an insurance agent called the repair shop. He represented the company it belonged to and said his company would pay for repairs.
Jim Storms says, "I was really shocked. I was very happy."
Hansen says, "They've offered me a rental car so I think they're going to take responsibility of paying for damages."
The insurance adjustor wouldn't reveal the person responsible for the debris but had they not taken responsibility, two vehicle owners faced hefty repair bills.
An oil pan is a vital but it's often an exposed engine part.
Charlie Graham Auto's Jim Champion says, "When the oil comes out, you have no life blood going through your engine."
The weight fell off a truck nobody could identify but after our story its owner took responsibility.
.
Sandy, a first grade teacher, says it's a life lesson she'll use in class.
"You know, it was a surprise -- a real pleasant surprise," she said. "And a good example for young people."
At least two other cars might have been damaged by the weight that fell onto 180th street.
