A large bird known as an Emu had to be shot in western Douglas County Monday morning.
An Emu had been reported on the loose near Waterloo the past couple of days.
The Emu was spotted near 240th and West Dodge. A Humane Society officer was consulting with a supervisor on how to tranquilize the big bird when the Emu darted in the direction of the busy highway where it could have caused an accident.
That forced a Douglas County deputy sheriff to shoot and killed the Emu.
The Nebraska Humane Society is trying to determine the owner of the Emu.
