Omaha Police Monday identified the 15-year-old boy wounded by an officer Friday afternoon as Cameron Williams, a student at Bellevue West High School.

Investigators say Williams was shot in the chest by Officer Josiah Warren at 84th and G streets after he fired multiple times at the police officer following a traffic stop. Williams is still listed in stable but critical condition at the Nebraska Medical Center.

Police report that Williams' gun was recovered at the scene. They say he fired two shots at Officer Warren, who returned five shots.

Police say Williams will be charged as an adult. "We’ll probably be making an effort to transfer this to juvenile court," said the suspect's attorney, James Martin Davis.

Police add that Friday's shootout was not the first time the boy has been in trouble with the law. Williams was placed in the custody of his grandparents in October 2008. His grandfather wrote on a court document that Cameron was "out of control and disrespectful to his mother, grandmother and me.”

In August 2008 Williams was in trouble for stealing school property. He ran into trouble with the law in Douglas County and again in Sarpy County in June of this year when he was charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver. That violated his probation and a motion was made to revoke it.

Five months later, Omaha Police say Williams fled a traffic stop and fired two shots at an Omaha Police officer. Interim Police Chief Alex Hayes met with reporters Monday. Hayes was very clear in believing the shooting of Williams was justified.

Cameron’s mother, Anita Parsons, was able to see him in the hospital for the first time on Monday. She paints a different picture of her son.

"He’s a teenager, he’s had his days, but otherwise he’s a loving person, a caring person and I haven’t seen any violence in him at all."

The incident began when officers stopped a car for expired license plates. Police say at some point during the proceedings Williams jumped out of the car and started to run.

Officer Warren, who joined OPD in 2008, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during an investigation by Internal Affairs and the Homicide Unit of the Omaha Police Department. He is a veteran of the Iraq War.

Two men in the car were arrested, 20-year-old Charles Thompson of Omaha and 22-year-old Richard Holmes of Bellevue. Both were booked for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

Holmes was later rebooked for also providing false information, obstructing and several misdemeanor warrants. Thompson, the owner of the car, was booked for no insurance or registration and a bond review.
