Police are sorting through an alleged case of road rage that ended in gunfire. The shooting victim, free on bond in an assault case, suffered a wound to the hand. Investigators are looking for the person who pulled the trigger.

The incident happened late Thursday morning just south of 72nd and Blondo.

Twenty-five-year-old Joseph Johnson says he was cut off in traffic. He allegedly chased down a white Cadillac involved in the offense and got out of his pickup truck.

A witness says, "He kept screaming and yelling, 'you want some?' and using foul language. And just as he got up to the side of the car, fairly close range of the driver, is when I heard the shot go off."

The witness has spoken with police but does not want to be identified. He says he heard the screech of tires, looked up and saw the entire confrontation.

"The man in the pickup truck was enraged," said the witness.

Based on witness and police accounts, Mr. Johnson raced ahead of the Cadillac and hit the brakes, forcing the Cadillac driver to stop.

As Johnson got out of his truck, the witness says, "He was extremely aggressive. He was using foul language. His chest was all swelled-up. He had both fists clinched at his side."

The driver of the Cadillac pulled a gun and fired one shot. It hit Johnson in the hand.

The identity of the person who fired the shot is a mystery. Some witnesses said it was a woman and some said it was a small man. The person drove away from the scene.

As all of this was unfolding, a Douglas County deputy pulled up in an unmarked car. Johnson, who had returned to his truck, reportedly hit the unmarked cruiser as he left the scene on the way to the hospital.

Joseph Johnson is a former subject of a Heartland's Most Wanted report. Nine days before the traffic confrontation he was arrested for First-Degree Assault. He is currently out on bond.

Police continue the search for the Cadillac driver.
