Police are sorting through an alleged case of road rage that ended in gunfire. The shooting victim, free on bond in an assault case, suffered a wound to the hand. Investigators are looking for the person who pulled the trigger.

The incident happened late Thursday morning just south of 72nd and Blondo.

Twenty-five-year-old Joseph Johnson says he was cut off in traffic. He allegedly chased down a white Cadillac involved in the offense and got out of his pickup truck.

A witness says, "He kept screaming and yelling, 'you want some?' and using foul language. And just as he got up to the side of the car, fairly close range of the driver, is when I heard the shot go off."

The witness has spoken with police but does not want to be identified. He says he heard the screech of tires, looked up and saw the entire confrontation.

"The man in the pickup truck was enraged," said the witness.

Based on witness and police accounts, Mr. Johnson raced ahead of the Cadillac and hit the brakes, forcing the Cadillac driver to stop.

As Johnson got out of his truck, the witness says, "He was extremely aggressive. He was using foul language. His chest was all swelled-up. He had both fists clinched at his side."

The driver of the Cadillac pulled a gun and fired one shot. It hit Johnson in the hand.

The identity of the person who fired the shot is a mystery. Some witnesses said it was a woman and some said it was a small man. The person drove away from the scene.

As all of this was unfolding, a Douglas County deputy pulled up in an unmarked car. Johnson, who had returned to his truck, reportedly hit the unmarked cruiser as he left the scene on the way to the hospital.

Joseph Johnson is a former subject of a Heartland's Most Wanted report. Nine days before the traffic confrontation he was arrested for First-Degree Assault. He is currently out on bond.

Police continue the search for the Cadillac driver.

They describe the shooter as a woman or a small man. My guess is that it was an elderly person (when they are hunched over, its hard to tell the gender), and they were afraid he was going to kill them (I would think the same thing). This is obviously a case of self defense. If he had stayed behind bars where he belongs, this would never have happened. Case closed... let it rest.

The Agressive guy johnson needs to spend some time in jail without bond or probation opportunties.he is very dangerous and is a very good example why this city has so many problems. too many dangerous people like johnson running around town.

I don't agree in gun violence but this was clearly self defense.Joseph Johnson seems to be a very angry person who seemed ready to harm the person after making them stop their car. After reading and seeing his other incidents what is it going to take for him to stop bullying people?Im sure getting shot will not stop him if he was threathening to harm someone over road rage when he is already out on bail for first degree assault.

I can't believe some of the comments here talking about Virginia Tech and our concealled carry law. If guns weren't so easily accessible blah blah blah Va Tech would not have happened. That's ridiculous. If any one person in that whole building was carrying a weapon and was licensed and trained they could have confronted that whackjob after the first classroom and saved countless lives. As for the comments about conceal carry. What if the concealed weapon had been in Johnson's hand? Well if it was it would have been done illegally because someone with his background would never be approved for a license. But guess what! A criminal doesn't follow the laws so if he was inclined to carry a gun he could and would get one anyways. Even if you ban guns in this entire country the criminals will find a way to get them leaving the law abiding citizens helpless to defend themselves.

The bigger they are the harder they fall. This guy must have a death wish this is a good way to loose your life. I would have shot him too. How did that person know that he wasn't carrying a gun.

FOR THE FEW OF YOU DEFENDING JOSEPH JOHNSON YOU COULDNT POSSIBLY KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE HIS VICTIM OR HIS VICTIMS FAMILY SO WHAT RIGHT DO YOU HAVE DEFENDING THIS MONSTER. AS THE SIBLING OF ONE OF HIS VICTIMS I SPEND MANY SLEEPLESS NIGHTS OVER THIS IDIOT. TO THOSE OF YOU WHO AGREE THAT HE IS IN THE WRONG AND THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED....THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND WORDS

I seriously doubt the person who shot him had a carry permit... I know a LOT of permit holders around the country, and all they do is sit and talk about making sure they follow the laws and do things right. They know damn well to stick around to file a police report. There are MANY people in this city who carry a gun illegally.. there have been for years. I don't agree with the person shooting him.. Not over just what I've read happened.. the cadillac driver should have just driven away. But.. unfortunate for this guy, he happened to pick a road rage incident with one of the hotheads who have always carried a gun illegally in this city. But.. if you are in fear of severe bodily harm, kidnap, rape, or death.. you can use deadly force.. this person shooting him, may have acted a little prematurely.. but had the situation gotten worse they may have been very well within their legal right to defend with deadly force...

This guy is a nut! He's already shattered someones jaw and was on the most wanted list. Now we are supposed to help look for a "suspect" whom is only guilty of discharging a firearm in the city limits, self defense all the way. Think for a moment, most all of us have been in a similar situation. How would you respond to a enraged person that has blocked you in and looking for blood? The police seem to treat this as a minor problem. In the wake of VT these are the problem people in society.

Posted by: tonie on Apr 20, 2007 at 04:50 PM
He should be ordered to take Anger management classes. Before someone die's by his hands!!!!!

Posted by: Drew on Apr 20, 2007 at 03:12 PM
I think people like janet are the problem here. If someones driving recklessly call the police, don't endanger yourself or other people on the road getting even. Get over it, try being more courteous to other drivers (even bad ones)and maybe the idea will get around.

Posted by: Jerry on Apr 20, 2007 at 01:30 PM
Self defense? Maybe, however he/she was a law abiding person with a permit to carry a gun then they would not have run.

Posted by: Dave on Apr 20, 2007 at 01:27 PM
E...Obviously you are a little slow..or someone who thinks violence is the answer. Both were in the wrong violence is not the answer.

Posted by: Galvanizer on Apr 20, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Serves Johnson right. He should have prepared himself to face the consequences of his actions once he stepped out of his vehicle to confront the other individual. The Cadi driver had no clue what this Johnson was about to do. Lucky just the hand was hit. He could have been run over?!... Did Johnson also hit a car (unmarked police) when he left? Where's his ticket for leaving the scene of an accident?

Posted by: c on Apr 20, 2007 at 11:43 AM
i also hope the driver is never found. and if they are i want to find them to personally thank them. agree or disagree but johnson is a danger to omaha and we need people like him off the street. the person in the cadillac is a small person and johnson is a big buff 250 pound man who is likely to intimidate anybody that he comes after. theres a reason that new gun law was passed and i think its safe to assume this "small" person as described on the news, was defending themselves.

Posted by: Hope on Apr 20, 2007 at 10:56 AM
Joseph Johnson does have a history of violence and is a very intimadating person therefor if he got of his car with his fist clinched more than likely he intended to do bodily harm.He is currently out on bond for committing harm to someone over a small confrontation. If the driver is caught I hope things are easy on them because it was clearly self defense!

Posted by: S on Apr 20, 2007 at 10:49 AM
Not one person has mentioned the fact that there was a gun used when someone was apparently defending themselves against what appeared to be an extremely mad and possibly violent individual. There are many ways for one to defend themselves in this situation, and most of them are not as potentially dangerous as a gun. This guy got shot in the hand and NO ONE knows where the person was aiming. What if they had shot one of the innocent witnesses?

Posted by: Jed on Apr 20, 2007 at 10:41 AM
Janet... since WHEN is it OK to confront people who flip you off or cut you off? I understand the frustration.. but c'mon.. you were filled with rage? It sounds like YOU are also part of the road rage problem in this city. I've been flipped off.. I've been cut off.. honked at.. I ignore it. Are you really going to let a stupid traffic incident, possibly escalate into something that can ruin the rest of your life? Maybe you need to take a step back and rethink how you handle things. Don't confront ANYONE who flips you off, cuts you off, shouts at you in traffic.

Posted by: Jed on Apr 20, 2007 at 10:36 AM
I'm not saying the guy deserved to get shot... BUT.. HE was the one who started the road rage. The other vehicle may have accidentally cut him off... he had NO RIGHT to chase the car down, pull them over and confront them. He may have very well been shot in self defense... perhaps the other person shouldn't have fired a shot.. I sure wouldn't have.. not just from someone yelling.. but they may have been in great fear for all you know. This guy escalated the confrontation by not restraining his road rage temper. He never would have gotten shot if he hadn't done that. Let this be a lesson to all of you... ignore things that happen on the road.. don't let it ruin your day.

While we all know that you should not fire a gun in City Limits, now that we know more about this shooting "victim", it only leads me to say again, he got what he deserved, and the driver of the Cadillac, saved themselves from a serious beating by this disturbed man. I am the unidentified witness to this incident and this only reinforces my stand. He got exactly what he had coming. Maybe now he will stop and think before he decides to beat the hell out of someone again!

NOT SURPRISING AT ALL WHEN THEY LOCK HIM UP AND THROW AWAY THEY KEY?, THIS MAN IS DANGEROUS AND KILL SOMEONE OR GET KILLED, IM TALKING CAUSE I KNOW HE BROKE MY SONS JAW NOW HES ON BAIL. I SAY WTG THE MAN IN THE CADILLAC.

Access to and possession of guns in our society has become rampant. What if the "concealed" weapon had been in Mr. Johnson's hands? Different out come totally. Would Blacksburg have happened if access to guns hadn't been so easy? I don't think so. No other "weapon" short of a bomb would have done so much damage. We need to curtail access to weapons, especially the automatic variety. We also need to repeal the concealed weapon law...I don't feel any safer. The self defense argument just doesn't hold up.

Posted by: Pat on Apr 20, 2007 at 09:41 AM
This is why everyone needs to have a gun, right? WRONG!!!!! What if it was you who accidentally cut this guy off and he was the one with the gun. What an example! I'm afraid for our young men and women who do stupid things on purpose or accidentally who might be shot by someone like this. Both of these men are violent offenders!!!!!!!! How can the police be everywhere, every minute. They do the best job they can. Maybe it's time the responsibility lay with the people! We definitely need to be a lot more careful out there in our cars. You never know what the person is like in the car next to you and how they will respond. Just drive the best you can and if something happens, don't encourage violence.

Joseph Johnson is a bully out on bond as it is for first degree assault,if someone forced me to stop my car and got out yelling and using foul language with clinched fist I would have been scared to,Im not saying anyone should be shot but it serves him right for trying to continue to bully people, its clear he does'nt care when he is already currently out on bond for assault, who knows what could have happened to the driver.

He got what he deserved..."you have to take some, to get some!" Finally some REAL Justice! Thank God for the right to bear arms and defend yourself. esp. against a habitual assaulter like this one. Look's like there were three people in the car...the driver, smith & wesson!

Road rage is an everyday happening. Just get over it. Playing TOUGH GUY gets you shot.

I was appauled when I was flipped of after honking my horn to someone who was driving on the wrong side of the road for at least 7 seconds on about 156th and Blondo. WE SHOULD ALL JUST TAKE THE BUS NOW DAYS!

Posted by: Tim on Apr 20, 2007 at 01:33 AM
Maybe next time Mr.J.Johnson will think about confronting the driver of next vehicle he stops and gets upset with.Whenever another driver flips me off I just respond by thanking him or her for thinking that I'm #1.

Posted by: renee on Apr 19, 2007 at 11:45 PM
Um since when did it become okay to drive around with a gun, are you all missing that point, I to feel that the driver was scared but come on people we have someone driving around with a gun who was not afraid to pull it and use it...thank god it went into mr. johnson hand and not an innocent child in a car seat or any other bystander...they both should be charged.

Posted by: E on Apr 19, 2007 at 09:47 PM
I hope they never find the dirver. Omaha needs to make an example of Johnson! We need more cops out on the road, reduce the number of traffic violations and reduce the speed people are driving. This is getting out of hand! I am willing to pay more taxes to get more officers!!

Posted by: janet on Apr 19, 2007 at 09:29 PM
I had someone flip me off last week for honking at them while they were just sitting there after the light turned green. I just tapped my horn to let them know that the light had turned green and they flipped me off. I pulled up beside them and their passenger then flipped me off. I was also filled with rage. I tried to get them to roll their windows down and was ready to cut them off also. You don't know that Mr Johnson was necessarily going to inflict bodily harm on this person and when did it become alright for strangers to treat people like peices of garbage? To say that he deserved to be shot is utter nonsense but that the person that cut him off was within their rights as a fellow driver? I for one am also tired of being cut off and flipped off by rude drivers. Clearly people are responding to this incidence out of paranoia of the current situation in Virginia. Here's a tip people, Don't cut people off and don't flip them off if you aren't ready to do a little face to face with them just because you are sitting behind the wheel of a car. plain and simple.

Posted by: Richard on Apr 19, 2007 at 08:26 PM
As I see it the person in the white Cadillac responded in self defense. The issue of "Bully" in our society is manifesting itself in our youth at schools as well in adults. This Bully is lucky that the shooter wasn't a better shot.

Posted by: Uknown on Apr 19, 2007 at 07:30 PM
All though the shooter should turn themself in it appears they were acting in self defense giving the fact Joseph Johnson was forcing them to stop and yelling at them with clinched fist,I to would have been scared if he was coming up to my car,Joseph appears to have anger issues if he is already being charged with felony assault on an unrelated incident, who knows what he would have been capable of had that not happened but hopefully the shooter will turn themself in so they don't make it worse on themself even though it sounds like it was out of self defense.

Serves the guy right; he obviously didn't learn anything nine days ago when he was arreseted for first-degree assault!

Posted by: DAVID on Apr 19, 2007 at 05:13 PM
ROAD RAGE IS COMMON IN THE METRO AREA. PEOPLE ARE OFTEN OVER BRAVE WHEN BEHING THE WHEEL OF THEIR VEHICLE. FIPPING YOU OFF AS THEY SPEED TO THE OFF-RAMP OR AS THEY FLY THROUGH A RED LIGHT TO STAY AHEAD. DONT GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLES WHEN YOUR NOT OR THEY'RE NOT IN THE RIGHT STATE OF MIND. NO GOOD CAN EVER COME FROM CONFRENTATION. COUNT TO 10 AND DRIVE ON.

Posted by: Don on Apr 19, 2007 at 04:50 PM
Did the occupant of the white Cadillac actually commit a crime (besides leaving the scene of the shooting)? Sounds to me like self defense and Mr Johnson shouldn't of stopped his vehicle in the middle of 72nd st and jump out to confront the other driver.

Posted by: COMMON SENSE IS NOT THAT COMMON on Apr 19, 2007 at 04:39 PM
Ok you get cut off ur still alive then you want to go confont the guy for cutting you off. You have a road rage/anger problem and you put yourself in that situation. I cant feel sorry for the guy. Next time stay in your car and shout all you want... but you might want to do it with the windows up though.

Posted by: J on Apr 19, 2007 at 04:25 PM
The Cadillac should have stayed around for the police to arrive. Sounds like a pretty good self defense claim to me. Shooting may have been over the top, but there is no reason for this knucklehead to get out of his car and try to start something.

Posted by: Mark on Apr 19, 2007 at 04:00 PM
Darwinism at it's finest, hard to feel bad for the guy.

Posted by: BW on Apr 19, 2007 at 03:45 PM
I unintentionally cut a guy off a couple weeks ago in the 132nd & L street area. After he unsuccessfully tried to run me off the road, he pulled into a parking lot and waited for me to come by so he can take another try at it. Luckily, another vehicle got in his path. People need to relax and expect to be cut off in traffic sometimes. The world is not full of perfect, courteous drivers!

Posted by: Common Sense on Apr 19, 2007 at 02:35 PM
In today's society, when has it become safe to approach another car after you just cut them off in traffic? Luckliy the guy just got shot in the hand.
