The 15-year-old boy shot by an officer who was fired at following a traffic stop near 84th and G streets in Omaha late Friday afternoon remains in critical, but stable condition. His name has not been released.
It was business as usual Saturday at Lyle's Tires and Wheels, but Friday was anything but usual.
“I heard about six or seven gunshots and I looked out the shop door and I was looking for anything,” said Lyle’s employee Jay Liddick. “I'd seen one of the police officers running between the buildings down towards Nebraska Motorcycle Shop. Like chaos, they had the street blocked off at F, half of 84th Street.”
Police say a Chevy Impala was stopped at 84th and F just before 4:30 p.m. because it had expired plates. As the traffic stop progressed, police say the 15-year-old got out of the car and ran.
About a block later, he allegedly turned and fired at officers. An officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the chest. Within minutes, Interim Police Chief Alex Hayes was on the scene. Officers from Ralston also responded.
For many who work in the area, they're still trying to get over the shock. “I've been in trouble in my life before, too, but oh my God.” Just thinking about the shooting makes Denise Roberts shudder. She can't figure out how a 15-year-old ends up in this type of situation. “He's actually really lucky to be alive.”
Two men were arrested, 20-year-old Charles Thompson of Omaha and Allen Jones, both booked for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
Police have since learned that Jones gave a false name and is actually 22-year-old Richard Holmes of Bellevue. Holmes was rebooked for possession with intent to deliver marijuana, false information, obstructing and several misdemeanor warrants.
Thompson, the owner of the car, was also booked for no insurance or registration and a bond review.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during the investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit and the Homicide Unit of the Omaha Police Department.
The scene of the incident was visible from Interstate 80 where thousands of motorists passed by during the evening rush hour. Police blocked the eastbound exit ramp to 84th Street and the southbound lanes of 84th Street for several hours. The exit ramp reopened at 10 p.m., though police cars could still be seen at 84th and G.
