Volunteers at the Open Door Mission are stuffing the trucks, getting ready to deliver meals to 3,000 near homeless families in time for Thanksgiving.
This Saturday 700 drivers will drop off the "Turkey 'N' Fixins" boxes to nearly 3,000 homes in the area.
Families in need pre-registered to receive a turkey and items to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner in their own home.
The Open Door Mission also has its sights set on Christmas and needs volunteers to help prepare 6,000 bags of toys for needy children. Visit the Open Door Mission's Web site to sign up and to see other volunteer opportunities.
Donations are also needed. CEO Candace Gregory tells Channel 6 News that donations are slower this year and more people are needing assistance. Gregory reports a 37% increase in hot meals served, a record setting number for the Open Door Mission.
