Health officials Wednesday reported one more H1N1 death in Nebraska and two more in Iowa.
A Lincoln County, Nebraska man in his 30s had no chronic underlying health conditions.
“Another death weighs heavily in our hearts,” said Dr. Joann Schaefer, chief medical officer for state's Department of Health and Human Services.
“Our surveillance is showing a drop in flu activity, but for this time of year it’s still very high. We need to remain vigilant because flu can be very unpredictable.”
So far, there have been a total of 12 H1N1 flu deaths reported in Nebraska.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, both victims, an adult in Floyd County and an adult in Johnson County, had risk factors that increased the chance of complications from the H1N1 virus.
The two deaths brings to 21 the number of Iowans who have died after contracting the virus. More than 600 people have been hospitalized with influenza-like illness since September 1st.
The health department gave a breakdown of the people who have contracted the H1N1 virus. Officials say deaths mirror the state's population with all age groups and racial and ethnic groups affected.
Among those hospitalized, the most common underlying medical conditions were immune-compromised conditions, such as cancer, respiratory ailments and neuromuscular conditions. More than half those hospitalized were overweight or obese.
