A winter weather advisory for rain and snow remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday for southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa.

This includes the Nebraska counties of Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee and Richardson and the cities of Auburn, Beatrice, Fairbury, Falls City, Nebraska City, Pawnee City and Tecumseh.

In Iowa, the advisory covers Fremont and Page counties and the cities of Clarinda and Sidney.

Up to nine inches of snow was reported in some areas. A mix of rain and snow will continue with a trace to three inches of additional accumulation possible. In addition, north winds at 10-25 mph may result in additional power outages.

The Nebraska Public Power District says Pawnee City, Table Rock, Burchard, Dubois, Humboldt, Dawson, Crab Orchard, Shubert, and Verdon have been impacted by the storm.

As of 2:30 p.m., approximately 2,000 retail customers were without power along with approximately 4,200 customers served by Norris Public Power District, an NPPD wholesale customer.

Omaha Public Power District spokesman Jeff Hanson says about 600 customers lost power after a problem occurred at a substation near Verdon in the southeast corner of the state.

Richardson County Sheriff Vernon Buckminster suffered minor injuries when his vehicle collided with a semi on snow-slickened Highway 75 near Dawson Monday morning.

"It's a lot of snow,” said trucker Dan Manning of Humboldt. “I left Humboldt this morning about seven and went to Sabetha, Kansas and sat there for a couple of hours by the side of the road. It was too bad and I'm trying to get back home now."

The storm had people in Auburn scrambling to stay dry. Jana Smith of Brock, Nebraska wasn't enjoying herself much at lunchtime.

"When I woke up in Brock this morning it wasn't like this, it was just drizzle and it started this morning and it is slushy and I'm sure it's gonna be slick when I go home tonight.”

She remained philosophical about the whole thing. "Well, I know the guys still have crops out in the field, but I think it's a pretty snow, but it's awfully wet, we gotta do what we gotta do, gotta live through it."

A winter weather advisory is also in effect until midnight Monday for the Iowa counties of Adams, Ringgold, Taylor and Union, including the cities of Bedford, Corning, Creston and Mount Ayr. Moderate to heavy snow with accumulations of 1-4 inches are possible.
