An Iowa soldier wounded in last week's deadly shooting at Fort Hood in Texas is to have surgery.

27-year-old Staff Sgt. Joy Clark, of Des Moines, was shot in her left forearm in the rampage last Thursday that left 13 dead and 29 others injured. The accused gunman, an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasen, was also shot and survived.

Clark's surgery is scheduled for Monday. She arrived in Fort Hood last Tuesday for additional training before being deployed overseas.

Clark, in a copyright story in the Des Moines Sunday Register, says she expected to face fire in Iraq or Afghanistan, but never at home.

Clark is an occupational therapist's assistant. Her specialty is helping people with hand injuries.
