As the economy continues to recover, a record number of consumers continue to keep up with the money saving strategy of clipping coupons, but who needs scissors anymore? There’s a new way to save money.

Mitzi Hughes was sorting through her ValPak coupon offers, always watching for the best deals. "When I get the mail, I just come into my kitchen, zip through them real quick, I pull out what I might use and then I know what I've got.”

Now the company is offering a new way to get these offers out. Instead of having to remember to take the coupons with you to the store, the only thing you need to remember is the cell phone.

“The color pops up to offer you different categories.” Scott Farkas, president of ValPak in Omaha, showed off the new coupon iPhone application. You pick a category, it pops up deals at businesses closest to you. It shows how many miles you are away, it even gives you a map to get there. Best of all, you don't have to carry around all the paper coupons.

"I forgot the coupon at home, you can pull it up on your phone, show it to the person at the register, it has a unique code so the business can actually track it and you're good to go,” said Farkas.

Mitzi said that for now, she will continue her tradition of sorting through paper coupons. "I don't have the iPhone so for me I actually need the little coupons, but you can also print them off on the computer at home.”

No matter what method she picks, she will still look for the best bargains.

ValPak says the jump in local consumers using coupons has been dramatic. The company's Web site traffic saw its numbers jump from 190,000 visitors to 280,000 visitors per month.
