The latest Windows operating system will be officially released tomorrow, October 22nd. Windows 7 is supposed to be a drastic improvement of Windows Vista and XP. But an upgrade could be complicated for the average computer user.
If your computer currently has Vista, an upgrade to Windows 7 is pretty straightforward for most computer users. But if you want to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, it will be a little more complicated.
Michael Johnson, director of operations at InfiNet Solutions in Omaha, explains. "If you're upgrading from XP, you're actually going to have to do a clean install. You can't just pop the CD in. You're actually going to have to back up your data, and then do the install, and then reinstall all the programs. So if you're going to be a home user and are fairly user savvy, then I would say go ahead. But if you're a little uncomfortable, and you have some things you want to make sure you keep, I would probably take it to a professional, or someone that you know and trust and have them do it for you."
InfiNet Solutions offers installation packages starting at $219. That includes the cost of the software. If you want to install it yourself, there are three versions that you can buy. The Home Premium upgrade costs $119. The Professional upgrade is $199. The Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade costs $219.
Johnson says Windows 7 is much more stable than previous versions and won’t crash as much. It is also more efficient than Vista so it won’t require as much memory and computing power.
